The best mobile games in 2023

Writing a definitive list of the best mobile games is a difficult – some might say foolhardy – task at the best of times. We’re talking about an operation that includes hundreds of thousands of games spread across iOS and Android, covering more than a dozen years.

So we decided to approach this matter from a simple, if somewhat far-fetched, hypothesis. If an alien landed tomorrow and demanded a crash course in gaming, which top mobile games would you encourage them to install on the best gaming phone first? With this unusual filter applied, we’re not looking for obscure gems or even necessarily runaway hits here. We look at those important, genre-defining games that are fundamental to the history of smartphone gaming, a veritable collection of the best games on the App Store and Google Play.

All we require is that the game must remain active and great to play today. We’ll also only include one game per series, so we’ll generally (but not exclusively) choose the first entry rather than the best.

Best Phone game in pc

Monument Valley

Monument Valley – especially its sequel, Monument Valley 2 – is one of the rare video games that has crossed over into the mainstream. The type referenced in TV shows and played by even non-gamers.

That’s not to downplay its ingenious Escher-like spatial puzzles, or its hauntingly beautiful art style. This is just to say that a very large number of people love it very much, including us.

Raid: Shadow Legends

It’s easy for experienced players to get a little familiar with gacha RPGs. But the simple fact is that it seems like a pretty surprising number of people are playing it, and Raid: Shadow Legends is the 800-pound gorilla of this game.
A special subgenre that is both loved and hated. You can’t really ignore it.

In fact, it’s enough hard to ignore a game that looks this good, with stunning 3D plates and screen- filling fireworks accompanying every PVE crusade charge or PVP Arena grain. Read our Raid Shadow Legends league list if you want some help getting started.

Mech Arena

From the developer that brought Raid: Shadow Legends to the world, Mech Arena is exactly what it says on the tin. You and other players control mech suits and fight each other in arenas – there’s plenty of customization available for the mech, and things you can unlock by grinding.

It’s not a complicated concept by any means, but it’s a game that’s really easy to dive into when you’re looking for some simple excitement. The controls are tight, the combat is varied and fun – and at the same time, there are many different arenas in which you can battle, from desert camps to moon bases and Japanese cities. The demo is quite reminiscent of Overwatch in real life, so if you enjoy that game, you probably will too.

Epic Seven

Do you like a little anime? Does the random action of a gacha game interest you more than anything else? Well, in this case, we recommend you try Epic Seven. This free-to-play game is about building a team of heroes and then taking them through RPG battles as you progress through the story.

Through the writing of the game, you really get a feel for the wide range of characters, and the gacha gameplay means you’ll likely grow attached to a different group of characters than any other player. Add to that the fact that it has some really cool animated scenes and you’re left with an experience that’s as engaging as it is addictive.

Idle Bank Tycoon: Money Empire

If you’re looking for a satisfying and relaxing experience, Idle Bank Tycoon: Money Empire is a great choice. This idle clicker game sees you playing the role of a brilliant banker as you build your banking empire, upgrade and expand locations, increase your reputation, and attract wealthy clients. You can also hire staff to maintain cash flow when you’re not online. So go get that cash dollop!

Forge of Empires

This free mobile strategy game is one that advances on multiple fronts. First, you’ll feel the satisfaction of creating your own settlement, which you can build and develop as you wish, using the resources you collect to invest in different types of research. Then there’s the fact that you’ll see it pass through multiple historical eras in the real world, before moving on to the sci-fi worlds of the future. Moreover, you can also engage in turn-based strategic battles while other countries wage war against you.

There’s a lot of great content in Forge of Empires, and it’s one of those games that you’ll easily spend hundreds of hours in when you come back to it every day. It’s addictive in all the right ways, and a must-play for fans of strategy or history

Rise of Cultures

Yes, you are right this is the alternate game developed by Innogames that we have included on this list, but do not worry, we’ll be fastening on other inventors soon( we promise), and this game surely deserves its place on this list. So what makes Rise of societies so special?

Well, like Forge of Empires before it, Rise of Cultures is a game about building a civilization that grows and expands across different eras of history (Innogames is good at things like that), but in this game, there’s a more human-focused approach. Not only can you choose different types of cultures to cultivate in your civilization, but you can directly control individual workers, give them the most productive work schedules possible (including rest time), and deploy them to enhance your city as you wish. Look please.

Jetpack Joyride

Jetpack Joyride wasn’t the first endless runner to hit mobile (shoutout to Canabalt), but it was one of the oldest and best. Just as important to this roster, it’s still going strong, with continued support from legendary developer Halfbrick.

As hero Barry Steakfried, you can run, fly and smash your way as far as possible, utilizing wild force powers and randomly generating hazards.

Reigns

There are three Reigns games on iOS and Android, and they’re all great examples of how the narrative-driven adventure genre can be updated for the modern mobile gaming audience.

The key, apparently, was adding a big touch of humor and implementing a card swiping control system taken straight from the dating app Grindr. Who knows?

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact unabashedly wears the influence of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with a familiar anime-influenced fantasy world and action-RPG mechanics.

But you will forgive this egregious act because it nails the formula so well, and because it does so in the form of a free- to- play mobile game. Which is absolutelyamazing. However, let us explain what Genshin Impact is in a simple way, If you are still not convinced. The Genshin Impact league list is also a good reference point for newcomers.

Hero Wars

Hero Wars is a game that you may have come across before, because the ads for it are fairly common. Unfortunately, it’s also largely unrepresentative, as the sliding door puzzle gameplay they offer is actually only a very small part of what Hero Wars is. However, the real essence of this game is still fun

The game follows a formula familiar to many mobile players: it’s all about building a team of heroes and watching them make their way through dungeons. If they’re not up to the challenge, you have to grind and boost them, or you have to work to unlock other heroes who may be better suited to the challenge. It’s a game that’s really easy to get immersed in, and those who play it will soon find that it becomes part of their daily routine.

Honkai Star Rail

Honkai Star Rail is a turn-based gacha RPG from the developer behind Genshin Impact. It features vibrant and exciting areas to explore, difficult enemies to defeat, and a roster of unique characters you can add to your team.

If you’re new to the game, we recommend you take a look at our Honkai Star Rail codes, Honkai Star Rail tier list, and our Honkai Star Rail emblem guides. We also have designs for each character, check out Jing Yuan from Honkai Star Rail and Seele from Honkai Star Rail.

Pokémon GO

If there’s another mobile game that has kept people coming back for as long as Pokémon Go, you should remind us about it. Having launched in 2016, it is still going strong.

This was the game that made augmented reality and location-based gameplay a real advantage, as you battle and capture cute creatures near real-world landmarks.

Slay the Spire

When the best deck-building card warrior arrived on mobile, it was like he had finally returned home. Plenty of other mobile games have succeeded in lifting the Slay the Spire formula wholesale, and some quite successfully.

But Slay the Spire still rules the roost with its intuitive, deep, and varied card-based combat system.

Alto’s Odyssey

If Jetpack Joyride represents the glorious past of endless runners, Alto’s Odyssey is its elegant present. The first thing you’ll notice is an art style so sharp and silky smooth that it belongs on the cover of a magazine

But it also plays amazingly well, with an incentive-driven structure that keeps you coming back just for more.

Call of Duty: Mobile

Android and iOS don’t lack for quality online shooters, but Call of Duty: Mobile is arguably the most comprehensive package out there. It combines a fast-paced multiplayer shooter with a more expansive Battle Royale mode.

Everything looks and moves beautifully too, with top-notch controller support and plenty of modes to try out.

League of Legends: Wild Rift

MOBAs are still big news in the world of esports, and on mobile just as on PC, League of Legends is king. Choose your hero and start a classic 5v5 showdown with your fellow players.

What is striking is how true to the original wording this portable version is. If you’re interested in trying it out, be sure to check out our League of Legends: Wild Rift tier list.

Grid Autosport

There are plenty of fast and engaging racers out there that seek to emulate the console experience on mobile. But there is only one that achieves a direct 1:1 conversion.

Grid Autosport is a classic full console racing game, brought to your phone in all its in-depth glory. It remains an amazing achievement.

Wayward Souls

RocketCat Games had a big hit with Wayward Souls, a roguelike RPG that takes the classic top-down action of 16-bit Zelda and applies some procedurally generated magic to it.

No two rounds are the same here as you hack, slash, explore and die. Repeatedly.

Kingdom Rush

Like The Room, you could take any entry from the four-strong Kingdom Rush series, and you’d have a shining example of the genre – in this case, tower defense.

Plenty of mobile games task you with carefully positioning and upgrading defensive units to fend off waves of enemies, but none do it with as much charm or attention to detail as Kingdom Rush.

Among Us

Among Us is a free- to- play online whodunnit that takes a new, ultramodern approach to online multiplayer play, taking precise communication and no small quantum of infidelity. It’s easy to see why it has managed to come one of the most popular games on the internet lately. Join your fellow players in preparing your spaceship for departure, but watch out for the pretender. Unless that is you, in which case, go ahead and kill your crew.

Clash Royale

The game that launched thousands of imitators, Clash Royale combines card combat strategy with MOBA-like base raiding. The playing cards here cause three-dimensional units to appear on a simple two-lane battlefield.

As is often the case with Supercell games, the presentation, learning curve, and balance are quite subtle.
